Grand Rapids arts council to hold Harvest Moon Gala

The Grand Rapids Arts Council will host a Harvest Moon Gala on Sunday, October 15, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Nazareth Hall, 21211 West River Road. The fundraising event includes a sitdown dinner prepared by the Nazareth Hall chef, a silent auction, door prizes, 50/50 raffle and entertainment.

Friends of ONWR receive national recognition

On September 26, Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge received a national award for their commitment to the refuge. Their unwavering commitment and enthusiasm for seamlessly connecting conservation and the local community has earned them the Molly Krival Award– Friends Group of the Year for the 2023 Wildlife Refuge Awards, presented by the National Wildlife Refuge Association.

Pumpkin Palooza to be held Oct. 14

The 2023 Pumpkin Palooza will take place on Saturday, October 14, at the Ottawa Park open-air shelter house, 2200 Kenwood Boulevard. From 5 to 9 p.m. residents are invited to attend the free, family-friendly event.

Lucas County engineer opens first water quality lab, aims to reduce algal blooms

The Lucas County engineer’s stormwater department is poised to create its first water quality lab this winter. Its project study plan was approved by the Ohio EPA’s surface water credible data program for level 2 chemical water quality assessment. The program classifies surface water monitoring performed by watershed groups, state agencies, schools, local volunteers and other organizations who gather the data to help improve water quality.

Shoreland Elementary unveils book vending machine

On October 9, members of Shoreland Elementary staff and the Parent Club cut the ribbon on the school’s new birthday book machine. Every student at the school will receive a coin to select a new book for their birthday with the hope of encouraging children to read more and improve their literacy skills. Funds for the machine were raised by the Shoreland Parent Club.

Meet the candidates night set for October 18

The Point Place Business Association will be hosting its annual Meet the candidates night on Wednesday, October 18, at 7 p.m., at the Friendship Park Community Center, 2930 131st Street, Toledo. Residents are invited to meet and hear from candidates who will be on the November 7 ballot for the general election.
