Memorial Day recalls sacrifice, bonds of family

More than 1.1 million military service members have died in wartime throughout U.S. history.

The total is more than the populations of San Francisco, Boston, Seattle or Washington D.C.

Those wounded or missing pushes the number closer to 2.8 million–just slightly more than the residents of Chicago.
