‘Toledo’s Day In The Sun’

Point Place to host 100th anniversary of historic boxing championship

On July 4, 1919, Point Place was the epicenter of one the greatest upsets in boxing history, when then underdog Jack Dempsey beat Jess Willard for the world heavyweight championship.

More than 97,000 people were packed into a makeshift stadium at Bay View Park, across from today’s Detwiler Park. This summer, the city plans to bring this historic fight back to life.

The mayor’s office recently announced the events planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the bout, calling it “Toledo’s Day In The Sun.”
