Asst. Fire Chief Helminski retires

A long-time member of the Springfield Township Fire Department is retiring.

At the June 15 meeting, the trustees reluctantly accepted the retirement/resignation of Assistant Fire Chief Rick Helminski, effective July 3.

“After careful consideration, I have decided that this is the right time for both my family and me to make this change in our lives,” he wrote in his retirement letter.

“Words cannot express how much of an honor it has been for me to serve this board and the community that I grew up in.”

The assistant chief noted a number of accomplishments during his tenure including relocating the communication center from a fire station to the 911 center in downtown Toledo; implementing an EMS billing program that has generated thousands of dollars for the department, and garnering thousands of dollars in grant funds to improve firefighter safety and the department’s capabilities.
