A multitude of enthusiastic individuals joined in the walk from Cullen Park to the Friendship Park Shelter House on Saturday, June 21. Good weather and good attitudes prevailed. At the shelter house, the walkers enjoyed refreshments. Raffle prizes were won by almost everyone who participated. Proceeds from the event are used for Mustard Seed’s community works. Area Fourth of July festivities set
Several area events are scheduled to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.

In Toledo, a “Red, White & Kaboom” fireworks display and Taste Toledo is planned for July 4-5, at Promenade Park.
The weekend celebration features food, family games  and live music from noon to 9 p.m. each day. The fireworks display will be held Friday, July 4.
A Taste Toledo festival will be held in the park July 4 and 5, by the Northwest Ohio Culinary Association. The event offers an opportunity to sample food from area restaurants.

Sylvania: Sylvania’s Star Spangled Celebration will be held  Thursday, July 3, from 7 p.m. to midnight, at Centennial Terrace, located at Centennial Road and Erie Street in Sylvania.
Fireworks will begin at approximately 10 p.m. The event also features live music by Bonkers, clowns, children’s rides and food and drinks for the entire family.
Admission costs $5, adults; $3, children age 12 and younger. The parking fee is $5 per car.
No carry-in food or beverages will be permitted at Centennial Terrace. The fireworks also may be viewed from Sylvania Pacesetter Park, 8801 Sylvania-Metamora Road.
There will be a $5 parking charge at the park that evening. Families are encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs to Pacesetter Park. Concessions will be available. All proceeds from the event will benefit Centennial Terrace.

Metroparks board presenter poses green ideas
At the Toledo Area Metroparks, going green means far more than the beauty of each park’s wooded environment. Russ Schifferly, project manager, has been leading the staff toward finding and using products that are better for the environment.
As part of that project, Mr. Schifferly introduced James Matzinger of the Northwest Ohio Green Products Center (NOGPC) to the board of commissioners at the June 25 meeting.
Mr. Matzinger pointed out that Metroparks throughout the state have been leaders in the green initiative. He encouraged the commissioners to continue leading the way, in part, by encouraging companies to produce biodegradable products.
“We’re trying to create a new industry in northwest Ohio,” he said, adding that the NOGPC helps companies produce soy bean or corn oil products to replace those traditionally manufactured using petroleum oil.
“We can help with the start-up of a company. There’s quite a bit of money out there,” he said.
